Shaping the future with e-mobility and circular economy

25. Okt 2021

This year's Fakuma in Friedrichshafen took place from October 12 to 16, 2021 as a presence trade fair. TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP used this year's Fakuma to present a range of new and proven materials.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP - TEREZ® ECO: New, heat-stabilized polyamide 6

With its TEREZ® ECO series, TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP offers material solutions based on post-industrial raw materials with permanently consistent qualities. Extensive supplier controls, audits and production monitoring ensure consistent product qualities with full REACH and RoHS compliance.

The demand for recycled compounds has increased significantly, particularly in the past two years. In the automotive industry, manufacturers increased pressure on plastics suppliers to switch to secondary raw material sources. Poor availability of prime commodities reinforced this process, making security of supply a key driver in addition to the sustainability aspect.

TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP - G-Blend: Sustainable PC/ABS compounds for automotive applications

TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP has entered into an exclusive sales and distribution agreement with Solid Polymer Solutions (NL) for sustainable PC/ABS compounds. With this agreement TER Plastics expands its portfolio in the field of recycled compounds with the brand G-Blend. The product represents over 17 years of experience in the development and production of PC/ABS blends based on recycled polycarbonate.

First-class raw material access and technology know-how result in a property profile on a par with prime material. Depending on the grade, the proportion of recycled raw material is between 50-70 %. PC/ABS G-Blend can be used wherever high requirements have to be met in terms of mechanics, heat resistance, process reliability and, at the same time, the sustainable aspect through a low CO2 footprint is important.

Chang Chun Group reduces plastic waste in the oceans

CCP leverages the value of already used materials for its high-tech products and relies on "Ocean Bound Plastics" for its polyester compounds.

Ocean Bound Plastic is plastic waste collected from the ocean or from tributaries where it would otherwise be expected to enter the sea.

In the proportion of recycled polyester, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 63%. The CO2 footprint has been proven and certified. In addition to different standard types, various materials with food approval and with flame retardant are also available.

ExxonMobil - Vistamaxx™ performance polymers.

TER Plastics, together with ExxonMobil, will present the comprehensive Vistamaxx™ product portfolio at FAKUMA.

Vistamaxx™ is a proven and cost-effective solution to improve the properties of recycled polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Vistamaxx™ acts as a compatibilizer between PE and PP in recycled material streams, improving the property to a high quality product.

The addition of recycled material in prime material often reduces the toughness and tear strength of products. Adding small amounts of Vistamaxx™ improves toughness and tear strength. Recycle new with Vistamaxx™.

DSM - Circular Economy

Our world is facing a number of urgent environmental challenges. Circular materials, in particular, help make our economy and society less dependent on petroleum, reduce plastic waste and carbon footprint, and meet changing legislative and end-user demands.

DSM Engineering Materials offers a range of bio-based and recycled solutions:

  • Biobased solutions (with measurable carbon-14- EcoPaXX®, ForTii® ECO, Arnitel® ECO).
  • Bio-based mass-balanced solutions (B-MB products)
  • Chemically recycled mass-balanced solutions (CRC-MB products)
  • Mechanically recycled solutions

The goal is to offer bio-based and/or recycled alternatives for the entire DSM portfolio by 2030 (with at least 25% bio-based and/or recycled content by weight of the final products).

DSM - Arnitel® ECO

Following the general sustainability trend, a bio-based thermoplastic copolyester (TPC) has been added to the successful Arnitel® product group in a sustainable ECO series. The ECO material consists of 50% renewable raw materials, based on rapeseed oil instead of mineral oil, and will be presented for the first time at FAKUMA.

Four shore harnesses have been developed that have a very light inherent color with very good UV resistance. It is particularly worth noting that there is no compromise here in terms of strength or elasticity at the expense of sustainability.

Arnitel® ECO has a melting point of up to 200 °C, making it ideal for applications with peak temperatures close to the melting point. In fact, the material maintains consistent performance throughout its operating temperature, outperforming other elastomers. Unlike rubber, Arnitel® ECO does not require vulcanization to optimize its mechanical properties. Main applications are demanding high-strength cable or automotive applications that are also exposed to higher temperatures.

FRANPLAST - Chemiton® Life

The market for sustainable materials is growing rapidly. In the field of SEBS compounds, TER Plastics and its long-term partner FRANPLAST will present a Chemiton® Life series at FAKUMA, which is made from renewable raw materials based on cane sugar.

Different hardnesses from ShoreA 30 to ShoreD 50 are available. Depending on the hardness, the bio-based content ranges from 20% to 60%. These high-strength, sustainable materials are odorless. Due to the low density (0.88 gr/ccm), applications in lightweight construction are also well conceivable. This combination of sustainability and low density gives full CO2 footprint. Main applications are household items (also food contact), consumer goods, toys and lightweight construction.

POLYTHERM - Polylan ECO

The company Polytherm appears with a portfolio extension in the field of technical regranulates. Continuous optimization of processes has led to the development of the new sustainable Polylan ECO grade range, which is now being presented for the first time at FAKUMA. TPU's are very valuable raw materials that are mechanically processed into high-quality thermoplastic polyurethanes in special processes. Thanks to special mechanical recycling processes, Polylan ECO grades can be reprocessed with little or no loss of quality. Depending on the type, the sustainability ratio is between 50 % and 70 %. The hardnesses offered range from ShoreA 60 to ShoreD 60 in light colors but are also available in black. In addition, a distinction is made between injection molding and extrusion types (cable extrusion). Thanks to “Made in Germany” (short distances!) the CO2 footprint is particularly low.

VERSALIS REVIVE® - Polymers from recycled plastics

REVIVE®, this is the newly developed, innovative product line of Versalis: compounds made from plastic waste coming from the municipal and industrial sector or supplied by the Italian household waste sorting system. They contain up to 75% recycled content, are of high quality and can be processed like prime material.

E-MOBILITY

DSM - Products for E-Mobility

In today's vehicles with combustion engines, electronics account for 40% of the vehicle's value, compared to about 5% in the 1970s. For electric or hybrid vehicles, this figure rises as high as 75%. As the industry continues to focus on reducing overall vehicle weight and increasing electrification, four key trends are driving the development of new electrical parts and components: mass reduction for cost savings, miniaturization, design flexibility and better thermal management.

Stanyl® PA46, ForTii® PA4T, EcoPaXX® PA410, Akulon® PA66, Akulon® PA6, Arnite® PBT enable reliable solutions through high temperature resistance, high mechanical properties and good electrical insulation properties.

Stanyl® PA46 enables cost-effective solutions due to better flowability and processability than PPS and PPA, allowing thin-walled designs.

ForTii® PA4T enables reliable solutions exposed to very high peak temperatures due to its melting point of 325 °C.

Polyplastics - DURANEX® PBT - ready for e-mobility

The electrification of the automotive industry is creating new demands on plastic components. Charging systems in particular demand the highest performance here. For example, in addition to high mechanical demands such as strength and toughness, hydrolysis resistance and challenging electrical properties are also required by the IEC62196 (standard for charging connectors) and UL2251 standards.

With the special DURANEX® PBT grades, Polyplastics brings these requirements together in one material.

Röhm - PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT

The turn toward electric cars is changing the design of vehicles. Plastics producer Röhm has developed special polymethyl methacrylate molding compounds (PMMA) for this purpose. PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT was specially developed for applications with high-power LEDs. Until now, this often required a compromise between high optical purity and heat resistance. According to Röhm, however, the molding compound meets both requirements. It is said to ensure very good optical quality even at elevated continuous operating temperatures, thereby offering the automotive and lighting industries greater scope for product design. For even higher temperature requirements, the plastics manufacturer has developed PLEXIMID® TT50 HF, a polymethyl methacrylimide (PMMI). It is also characterized by higher flowability and is therefore suitable for filigree structures, for example.

Unlike internal combustion engines, the drives of electric cars no longer rely on a cooling air flow. For this reason, the prominent grille on the front of the vehicle can give way in favor of other elements, such as illuminated emblems, other lighting elements and bezels for sensors.

Mitsubishi Engineering Plastics - products for electroplating

Decorative chrome plating continues to be an important tool for the automotive industry to create a high-end and luxurious appearance without compromising surface durability and weight gain when using all-metal parts. In addition, the use of chrome-plated plastic parts allows for greater differentiation, increasing the need for more complex designs with emotional and functional surfaces, such as textured chrome and the integration of ambient light and emphasizes the individual character of each vehicle. The XANTAR® C CP (PC-ABS) coating series was specifically developed to follow these trends and help our automotive customers implement their designs in a reliable and cost-effective process. The Xantar® C CP 200 / C CP 400 grades offer excellent flow properties with high heat resistance. The products have been optimized for stress-free, slow injection molding.

LIGHTWEIGHT

TER Plastics POLYMER GROUP - TEREZ® GT2: Lightweight construction and aesthetics with improved strengths

The TEREZ® GT2 product line provides an excellent basis for meeting aesthetic and functional design requirements. This material stands for high strength and stiffness with a low level of moisture absorption and guarantees high dimensional stability. The product range is now complemented by two new additions:

TEREZ® XG GT2 7150 features a 50% short fiber reinforcement. Compared to the standard products with 50% glass fiber reinforcement, it offers up to 10% increased strength with unchanged good processability. It thus enables even greater design flexibility for components subject to structural stress.

TEREZ® XG GT2 21004, on the other hand, combines high strength and stiffness with very low warpage behavior. The high demand for surface quality is also achieved with this product. It is suitable for large-area, visible components with high demands on mechanical properties and planarity.

DSM - ForTii® for structural components and metal substitutes in automotive engineering

Increasing performance, reducing fuel emissions and lowering total cost of ownership with new design potential in automotive applications is what the ForTii® PA4T MX portfolio stands for. The ForTii® (Ace) MX portfolio consists of semi-aromatic polyamides based on DSM's unique PA4T technology. With the development of the highly glass-filled ForTii® Ace, a material with a glass transition temperature of up to 160°C, DSM opens up a new area of metal replacement. ForTii® Ace enables the replacement of metal in parts that were previously impossible, giving designers even more freedom to create increasingly complex designs. This technology is perfectly tailored to automotive applications such as housings (EPS, actuators, sensors), brackets, covers, fuel pumps and connectors.
